What is 'self-charging'?
From Thriving In Mind, Chapter 11.

Self-charging is an important life-skill. It is as critical to our well-being and success as self-soothing. Those who do well in life use it regularly, consciously or unconsciously. If we haven’t learned to self-charge then we must teach ourselves. Not surprisingly, different people need to engage in very different, highly specific activities to ensure this self-charging. Moreover, certain types of thinking seem to almost naturally self-charge doing their morning routine i.e. the habitual things a person does from the time they wake up until the time they leave for work or school, while other types do not. As all of us benefit from self-charging, understanding this point can be very important especially for those who do not generally self-charge doing their morning routine. (To remind yourself about morning routines, see The Basal Left Sequential Mode at the beginning of Chapter 3.) Now, let’s look at some examples of self-charging.

Examples of Self-Charging

• Highly extraverted persons will be energized by doing an over center task in a noisy, crowded, fast-paced or competitive environment, especially one that is open and with 3-foot high dividers or cubicles maximizing interaction and stimulation.

• Highly introverted persons will be energized by doing an over center task in a quiet, out of the way, non-competitive or slower environment with fewer distractions or rooms/offices with floor to ceiling walls and doors that close, maximizing privacy.

• The 70 percent who have a balanced level of inner wakefulness will be energized by doing an over center task in a moderately stimulating environment that does not require the person to function at either of the above extremes.

Individuals and teams who use self-charging report their whole day goes better. These people start their day over center, using their natural preference for at least an hour (preferably two) in an environment appropriate for their stimulation needs. So, for the best results do what these people do. Structure your day so that during the first two hours you are using your preference in an environment suited to your introverted, balanced or extraverted needs, without interruptions.
